Recently, a friend wondered at my ability to stay encouraged and continuously bounce back. He remarked, "You must be made out of Adamantium." For you X-Men fans, yes he was referring to the indestructible metal in Wolverine's body.
Truthfully, positivity did not come naturally to me. In the past, my late husband was always the visionary, full of grand plans and excitement, whereas I could quickly come up with innumerable reasons why everything could go wrong. I was the classic Debbie-downer. My brain seemed wired to scrutinize every plan to find its holes, pitfalls, and establish precautionary measures. However, that negative filter came with a large dose of anxiety and fear, wreaking havoc on my poor nerves. My children were growing up, watching my ways, and I couldn't afford for them to adopt this doom and gloom mindset.
I needed to trust God, step out, and take more risks despite my wariness. To help me with this, I created new presets for my mind by applying this verse:
📖"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things" (Philippians 4:8 NIV).
Instead of expecting loss or failure, I can have a predisposition towards hope, vision and expectancy. When my mind wants to troubleshoot, I can choose to release encouragement in place of critique and focus on creative solutions that enable success. I choose to put my faith and hope to work on my behalf.
